Course Overview

If you are interested in working in the science or health related industry, this is an ideal vocational route. Topics of study may include Principles of Applied Science, Chemistry and our Earth, Energy and our Universe, Scientific Skills and many more. Successful completion of this programme can lead onto a Level 3 qualification.


What will I learn?

You will study a variety of interesting modules including:

  • Principles of applied science
  • Chemistry and our earth Energy
  • Biology and our environment
  • Applications of chemical substances
  • Applications of physical science
  • Health applications of life science
  • Scientific skills
How will the course be assessed?

Two of the units are assessed by written exams. All other units are assessed by written assignments. They are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. For every assignment you will receive an assignment brief which will clearly outline what you have to do for the assessment and how you can achieve your grades.

At the end of the year you will gain a Level 2 with two grades; e.g. Distinction, Distinction. You need to gain at least M,M and a L2/GCSE Maths and English to progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science.


There will be opportunities to take part in a variety of trips and visits, which will incur a nominal fee.


We have fantastic facilities in the College’s Science department, with a large number of spacious laboratories and up-to-date, industry standard equipment.

We have a mini-zoo with an interesting assortment of animals which you can observe and help to take care of as part of the course.

Progression and Careers

This is a highly respected Science programme which can lead to a number of exciting and rewarding careers. Former students are studying at a number of top universities including Lancaster University, St George’s Hospital in London, the University of Leeds and the University of Nottingham, studying exciting degrees including Earth and Environmental Science, Cardiology, Biomedical Science, Marine Biology, Audiology and Criminology and Forensic Psychology.
