Course Overview

You will learn how to perform a variety of hairdressing services, such as colouring and lightening hair, cutting hair using a range of techniques, styling and dressing. You will also learn to develop your communication and customer service skills when working with clients. You will learn how to operate the salon’s reception systems, from booking client appointments to offering retail services to clients.


What will I learn?

You will study a number of compulsory units including:

  • Health and Safety
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
  • Promote products and services to clients in the salon
  • Cut women’s hair Colour and lighten hair Cut men’s hair

You will also choose from a number of optional units including Styling, Plaiting, Perming, Dressing Hair, Cutting Facial Hair, Competitions Work, Scalp Massage and Reception Duties.

How will the course be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including online testing, assignments, practical assessments in a real working environment and working on reception.


There will also be the opportunity to go on a number of trips and visits which will incur a nominal charge.


Distinction Hair and Beauty has three large, stylish and spacious Beauty Salons, which are tranquil and relaxing places to work.

They are fully commercial salons, visited by the general public and you will consequently gain real-life work experience whilst achieving your qualifications.

All our salons are equipped with up-to-date industry standard equipment.

Materials and other information

Students will need to purchase the salon uniform and a Hairdressing kit.

Progression and Careers

The majority of our Hairdressing students go on to gain full-time work in the industry, working for local salons, city centre salons, hotels and even on-board luxury cruise liners. If you are passionate and hard-working, you might also progress to university to study a range of degree programmes available in Hair and Make-up for the Media Industries.

The College also works with numerous local salons to offer Apprenticeships in Hairdressing.
