Learning Resource Centre

Overview

Student Studying

The Learning Resource Centre plays a key role in the educational support of all college students whatever they may be studying. A wide range of resources are provided including books, journals, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs and on-line information sources.

Different study zones are provided to help you find the most appropriate area in which to study. If you need to work with your classmates on a particular assignment then you will find the quiet study zone useful.

Opening Times

During the term the LRC is open as follows. During the holiday periods a shortened service is provided.

Monday – Thursday 8.40 – 8.00
Friday 8.40 – 3.00

General

Once you have enrolled on a course you are automatically a member of the LRC. You will receive a college ID card and use this to borrow items and use our computer facilities.

At the start of your course you will be shown the LRC resources and facilities. Later on you may come back with your teacher and take part in a more in-depth session, looking at specific subject sources. However, we don’t expect you to become instant experts in research methods. Friendly staff are always on hand to provide assistance.

Borrowing

As a general rule you will be allowed to borrow 4 items at a time including 1 DVD or video. The normal loan period is 3 weeks though this may be extended twice providing no one else requires the item. Some of the more popular book titles and most DVDs and videos may be borrowed for one week.

By using the on-line catalogue you will be able to see what stock is available in your subject area. Our automated system will also allow you to reserve up to 2 items.

Computers

When you first start to use the IT facilities, we will activate your network account, enabling you to print your work and save it to your own area on the College network.

We have 50 computers offering access to word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mailing, scanning and Internet facilities. The LRC subscribes to a number of useful on-line databases to help you with assignment research. We also provide specialist software on some of the PCs.

The college Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) contains a vast array of materials and during your time as a student your teacher will direct you to specific materials. Each subject area has its own courses section on Moodle, providing study notes, assignment topics, useful website links and much more.
