Prize winning chefs at Nelson and Colne College

Nelson and Colne College is celebrating after a team of three talented Catering students achieved third place in the regional heats of the Brake Brothers Student Team Chef competition amongst tough competition.

In its 17th year, the competition is run in conjunction with the Craft Guild of Chefs, which looks for the culinary stars of the future. Those at the top of the trade agree that nurturing the next generation of talented chefs is extremely important. The competition saw 60 teams compete for places with just 30 going through to the regional heats.

The team from Nelson & Colne College included Amanda Marsh, Tatiana Vorontsova and Stacy Ashcroft, who submitted a menu which included monk fish wrapped in bacon with char grilled king prawn, Lancashire hindle wakes with seasonal vegetables and a dessert of fig or fag pie with vanilla ice-cream.

Martin Bates, C.E.O of the Craft Guild of Chefs saying, “As judges, we were very impressed with the Nelson and Colne College menu as it features delicious seasonal and regional ingredients and demonstrates excellent culinary skill.” The teams’ dessert was a special favourite of the judges who said, “If there was a prize for rationality and research this dish would have it! It’s a brilliant idea that should be taken hold of; an afternoon tea in itself served with excellent well made ice-cream.”
