A Level Biology aims to enhance your understanding and appreciation of living organisms, how they function individually and how they interact with one another.
What will I learn?
You will plan experiments, collect data, analyse results and make conclusions. You will study diseases, the organisation of cells, variation in organisms and the influence of genetic and environmental factors. You will also study populations and environments, looking at certain ecosystems, how human activity affects the ecological balance and how genetic variation can lead to the formation of new species.
In addition, you will learn about control in cells and organisms, stimuli and responses, homoeostasis, genes and genetic expression. Practical investigation work is emphasised, which will extend your practical skills. This course is essential if you plan to study Biology at university.
How will the course be assessed?
You will be assessed by examinations at the end of the two-year course.
You will also be expected to carry out independent study and other personal development activities alongside your programme, such as additional workshops, an Extended Project Qualification, leisure extracurricular activities, volunteering or work experience, or part-time employment.
Materials and other information
Students will benefit from new high-tech science laboratories, housing industry standard equipment. Within Biology, we have a mini-zoo with an interesting assortment of animals which you can observe and help to take care of.
