Course Overview

How do you view your microwave oven? Is it just a box that is called upon to heat your leftovers or cook a ready meal after a hard day at work, or does it play a big role in your kitchen?  There is a lot more you can do with your microwave and during this short course, learners will discover some of the tips and tricks to get the best from it, including using the microwave to cook mashed potato, rice and how to prepare a soup using fresh ingredients.

How long is the course?
The course is 2 hours per week and is delivered over 2 sessions or weeks.

What will I learn?

At the end of the course, learners will be able to:
List key health and safety considerations when using microwaves to cook or heat food
Recognise appropriate uses of a microwave and how to heat food safely
Participate in practical cooking activities creating at least two dishes following a given recipe
State the benefits of using the microwave to cook meals
Identify and list appropriate progression opportunities

How will the course be assessed?

Learners attend via the online platform Microsoft Teams on a set day and time. The course will be delivered live and learners will be supported to work through the course content. In addition to this, learners will be given access to Moodle (VLE – Virtual Learning Environment) so activities can be completed during and between sessions to record progress and achievement.

Materials and other information

Learners will need access to:
A microwave
Mixing bowl
Microwave proof dishes
Potatoes and rice
Ingredients for a minestrone soup: carrot, onion, cabbage pasta, tin of tomatoes, vegetable stock cube, water and paprika.

So the course can start on time, it’s important to be ready to join your online course 15 minutes prior to the official start time.

Progression and Careers

The teacher will use a range of activities to review learner’s knowledge throughout the course and identify any gaps and additional information required
Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge
Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows you to identify how much you have learnt and where you might need to do further study or research.
Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on personal goals and aspirations.
