At Nelson and Colne College Apprenticeship Academy, we understand that it’s vital for young people to be equipped with the skills needed to secure employment. With this in mind, we have created a unique and innovative Pre-Apprenticeship programme which aims to prepare you for the world of work and provide you with skills which will make you attractive to potential employers.
Once you have attended an interview at the College and received a conditional offer, you will be placed on our Pre-Apprenticeship programme, which will run over the summer.
What is the Pre-Apprenticeship Programme?
This unique programme will help to build your confidence and skills to ensure that you perform well in interviews.
You will be given an initial advice and guidance session to tailor the programme to individual needs and aspirations.
The programme will include:
• Initial assessment of your skills to allow us to tailor-make your programme
• Opportunity to complete certain key skills essential for employment
• Communication and Presentation skills
• Industry specific qualifications and skills, i.e. Paediatric First Aid, Health and Safety at Work
• Relevant work experience
• CV production and Job Search Skills
• Interview techniques
Your personal circumstances will dictate how many Pre-Apprenticeship sessions you will be required to attend. For example, if you have already found an employer to support your Apprenticeship, and have all the necessary key skills, you will not need to attend as many sessions as someone who hasn't.

Gary Entwistle
Gary joined Nelson and Colne College’s Apprenticeship Academy from Norden High School in Blackburn, where he is undertaking an NVQ Level 3 Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery. He attends College on day release from his full-time position at The Fence Gate Inn, which is a highly acclaimed restaurant in Pendle.
Whilst studying his Apprenticeship, Gary was encouraged to enter the UK Young Seafood Chef of the Year Competition with another apprentice, Naem who also works at The Fence Gate Inn. The talented duo enjoyed great success, winning their regional heat against extremely strong competition and getting through to the grand finals!
Gary has great culinary ambitions, including a desire to work in a Michelin Starred restaurant and when asked what he would say to other young people who are deciding what to do next, he said, “always do your best and aim for the top!”
