AS/A2 Law

A qualification in Law demonstrates your ability to think clearly and logically. From the criminal justice system to creating legislation; the law touches many aspects of our day-to-day lives.

Not only will you be looking at a wide range of high profile real life cases, you’ll also find out about the offences themselves, how they came to court, how the Judge can sentence a convicted criminal and how solicitors, barristers, magistrates and juries interact. You’ll gain an understanding of how laws are made and how they are passed in parliament, police powers, criminal and civil courts and the European courts.

You will learn the basic principles of criminal law and how liability is established, and study criminal offences ranging from murder to manslaughter. You will also examine special or partial defences that apply to murder such as provocation and diminished responsibility. In addition, you will study non-fatal offences ranging from grievous bodily harm to minor assault and battery and examine the Theft Acts as they cover basic theft, robbery and burglary, including the defences available.

Studying Law will provide you with an extensive vocabulary, and enable you to develop excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

AS/A2 Government and Politics

Politics affect every aspect of life in the United Kingdom . They are responsible for the type of houses we live in, the amount of money we earn, the quality of education we receive and the sort of hospital care offered, in addition to a range of other vital decisions in our society.

Government and Politics is an interesting and exciting course, which will allow you to understand the decisions that are taken on our behalf and how they affect all aspects of our lives. You will acquire an understanding of how political decisions are made and who has the power and authority to make those decisions and how they are put into power.

You will focus on issues such as the mechanics of government including the European Union, Parliament and the role of the Prime Minister, local government and the civil service. In addition, you will study the political systems and various political ideologies including fascism and socialism.

This subject is also a pathway to a career in broadcasting, journalism, the legal profession, the police force and to becoming civil servants or clerks in the House of Commons.
