Physical Education (PE)

Study of Physical Education at AS and A Level will enhance your knowledge and experience of PE and Sport, as well as giving you a deeper understanding of health issues. This A Level offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of and participation in sport, play, leisure and recreation, allowing you to study movement, performance and behaviour in relation to PE.

In year one you will study anatomy and physiology and skills acquisition. You will also study performance, officiating and coaching in two sports of your choosing, 40% of this mark will be awarded according to your practical ability.

Progression to year two will allow you to study physiological, biochemical, psychological and contemporary issues in sport. You will also complete synoptic coursework, performance analysis and participation.

Prospective students of AS and A Level PE should enjoy science and looking at how the human body and mind is affected by sport participation. You should also be interested in the place of PE and sport in our society, how the subject has developed historically to fulfil its social role; and it goes without saying that you must enjoy developing and acquiring skills and techniques in a variety of physical activities.

If you specialise in a sport that you wish to be assessed in, the department will give you every opportunity possible to be assessed in your chosen sport.

 

Why choose PE?

If you are passionate about sport, or a talented sportsman or woman in your own right, you will find an A Level in PE to be very rewarding. Combined with A Level subjects such as Biology, Sociology and Psychology, you will be equipped to study Sport Science related degrees such as Sport Management, Sport Therapy, Teaching, Sport Coaching and Physiotherapy. Careers exist in a range of industries, from Sports Development and Coaching, to Sales and Marketing of sports equipment.
