If you already have your mind firmly fixed on a particular industry, such as Forensic Science, Hairdressing or Nursing, and you prefer a more practical style of study, then a Vocational programme such a BTEC Extended Diploma (formerly the National Diploma) or an NVQ may be right for you.
They were first designed with industry in mind, and with consultation from industry experts. Therefore, if you want to jump straight into your career after College, a vocational programme can be an excellent choice.
The simple answer is Yes! BTEC Extended Diplomas are equivalent to 3 A Levels and attract UCAS points in the same way. For example, if you achieve 3 Distinctions on your BTEC Diploma, it is the same as getting 3 As at A Level - see the UCAS points tariff for more details at www.ucas.co.uk
However, it is important to bear in mind that some of the more prestigious universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge will prefer you to have taken A Level subjects rather than a BTEC programme, so if you want to go to a specific university, do your research first and make sure you will be accepted with a BTEC qualification.
It is also sometimes possible for Vocational students to take an A Level alongside their full-time programme. A good example might be someone who wants to study Physiotherapy at university. They could undertake the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and also an A Level in Biology.
