
Our Vocational Science programmes are challenging, practical courses covering aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
They are aimed at those who enjoy science and would like to gain employment in the Scientific Industries. Due to the practical aspect of the course, you will develop skills which are essential to working in the sciences and consequently this programme can lead to a broad range of science based university degree programmes including Biomedical Science, radiography, Forensics, Zoology, Pharmacy and Veterinary Science and careers in these fields.
You will study 3 core units which are Chemistry and our Earth, Energy and our Universe and Biology and our Environment. You will then choose from specialist units which might include Health Applications and the Living Body; Physical Science Applications which looks at how to use physics to explain the universe and Chemistry Applications.
Why study BTEC Applied Science?
Due to the practical nature of this course, you will be able to seek employment in many science businesses, working at a technical support level; these might include Research Laboratories, Forensic Science Laboratories, a laboratory in a school, college or university or even in a Hospital Laboratory. You will also have an opportunity to apply for a variety of science based university degrees in diverse and interesting subjects such as Zoology, Marine Biology, Biomedical Science and even Veterinary Science.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science
At least 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas including GCSE Mathematics and Science.
Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science
At least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas including GCSE Science and Mathematics.
Aamina joined Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form to study for a Extended Diploma in Applied Science. She gained the top results for this course, three Distinctions.
Aamina was a participant in the College's Pre-Professional Programme for Medicine, which students follow in addition to their regualr studies.
Since completing her programme, Aamina has been offered a place to read Cardiology at St George’s hospital, one of the major London teaching hospitals.
