Many occupations or industries rely heavily on effective IT. Choosing to study this subject will provide an opportunity to study the factors involved in developing and managing effective and efficient computing systems used in everyday business.

You will develop your problem solving skills, your ability to analyse, appraise and make critical judgements about the use of IT and understand the role of people, technology and systems within organisations.

We offer 3 BTEC Extended Diploma pathways of study:

Multimedia and Website Development

You will study Computer Systems, Visual Programming, Web Management/Development, Networking and also PC Maintenance. You will be introduced to computer systems and databases, various uses of IT in industry, Information Systems and Web Development.

Games Design

This pathway will give you the skills required to work in the fields of Computer Games Design and New Media Industries. You will produce 2D and 3D games, websites and flash animations. You will learn about the games industry and games platforms.

PC Maintenance and IT Technician

You will gain an insight in the technical and hardware skills required to become a Computer Technician. This course covers in detail the workings of a computer‘s systems and networks, allowing you to be well versed in all day-to-day maintenance of PCs and networks. As part of the course you will also gain the Level 2 City & Guilds PC Maintenance qualification which will set you up for either a route into the IT industry or progression to university.

Entry Requirements

Level 3 BTEC Eextended Diploma PC Maintenance and IT Technician/Games Design/Multimedia and Website Development

At least 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas including GCSE English Language or Mathematics.

Level 2 BTEC First Diploma Information Technology

At least 4 GCSEs (one of which must be English Language or Mathematics) at grade D or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas.

Level 1 Introductory Diploma in ICT/Business or ICT/Engineering

At least one of the following: A standard of Literacy and Numeracy supported by a general education qualification equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade E-G; an Entry Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills or other Entry level qualifications

Primary Education at Leeds Trinity University

Ashley joined Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form from Colne Park High School. He successfully completed a National Diploma in Information Technology and an AS in Communication and Culture.
