
It is anticipated that the 2012 Olympic Games, held in London, will further mobilise the UK’s enthusiasm for sport. This increase in participation will create fantastic opportunities for production and effective sports practitioners.
The Extended Diploma has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain detailed academic knowledge and an understanding of the make up of elite performance. You will investigate the techniques used to identify talent and analyse the performances of top world athletes utilising these techniques.
The principles of Coaching, Psychology, Nutrition and Injuries are just some of the sport-related subject areas that will be explored.
You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands, studying aspects of health safety and injury, the body in sport, sport leadership skills, as well as preparation for sport, the sport performer and practical sport skills.
Why choose Sport?
We offer Vocational Sport programmes at Level 1, 2 and 3. Upon successful completion of the Extended Diploma it is possible to progress to a range of university degrees such as Sport and Exercise Science, Physical Education Teaching, Sports Therapy, Coaching, Health, Performance and Nutrition, Recreation and Sports Management and Sport Development.
There are also opportunities to apply for the Police or Armed Forces, or to seek employment within leisure centres, health clubs or sport coaching within the UK or abroad.
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport
At least 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas including GCSE English Language or Mathematics.
Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Sport
At least 4 GCSEs (one of which must be English Language or Mathematics) at grade D or above in a minimum of 3 subject areas.
Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport/Public Services
At least one of the following: A standard of Literacy and Numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grade E-G; an Entry Certificate in Skills for Working Life or Life Skills or other Entry Level qualifications.

Katie joined Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form from Hamledon Community College, choosing to study for a National Diploma in Sport. In addition to her studies, Katie was a key member of the College’s Netball Team, which won the BCS League title.
After achieving excellent results, Katie has been able to take up a degree in Sports Therapy at the University of Central Lancashire, after which she hopes to work as a Physiotherapist.
