It is one of the most nerve-wracking times of the year as students nervously await their A Level results. And for inspirational Nelson and Colne College alumnus Sarah Kendall it is a moment she will never forget.

After achieving her dream grades of A*AA in Biology, Chemistry and Physics last year, Sarah has gone on to gain a first class grade in her first year studying Microbiology at the University of Leeds. She has also been named on her University’s Dean’s List – an achievement she has described as a “huge honour” – and has been selected as the President of the Microbiology Society for the next academic year.

Now Sarah has reflected on her experiences of life at NCC, and reassured all those waiting to pick up their results on Thursday 13 August that hard work and determination can pay off.

Sarah, 26, from Barrowford, said: “I absolutely loved studying at NCC and I never wanted it to end. I made some fantastic friends, the subjects were interesting, and my teachers were wonderful – they made it fun and interesting and were always available if I needed any extra help.

“My dream set of grades was A*AA and when I opened the envelope to see those, I was so happy I cried! The relief was overwhelming as it confirmed to me that I was on the right path and that I actually had an ability to do science. Getting those grades and getting into my first-choice university was amazing and it did wonders for my confidence.”

As well as benefitting from the excellent teaching and facilities at NCC, Sarah also enjoyed the many enrichment opportunities open to her, including workshops and trips.

Since leaving College as a student, Sarah has returned as part of the NCC alumni network – offering advice on University life and information about her course.

She said: “I think it’s vital for current A-level students to have an idea of what to expect after college so if I can help them with that then it’s great.

“NCC provided one of the best experiences of my life and I had such a positive experience that I could talk about it for ages to anyone who’d listen! The staff deserve a medal and if I could’ve stayed for longer, I would have!”

Nelson and Colne College students can pick up their results on A Level Results Day from 7.30am. AS students can pick up results from 10.30am. Expert staff will be on hand to answer any queries on the day.
