Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form’s Men’s and Women’s Volleyball teams have been celebrating their successful season this year.

The teams have played in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) North West Regional and the National Plate Competition. The teams have also enjoyed success in the Grand Prix League held at Eccles Sport City.

Competition in the Grand Prix League has been tough, as the College’s teams have played against Holy Cross, Wigan and Leigh, Birchwood and Southport. Out of the 12 games played, the College team won 8, which is fantastic against such established teams.

The Men’s team have beaten last year’s National Finalists Salford 2-1 and have beaten this year’s Yorkshire and Humber National qualifiers New College Pontefract 2-0.  The Women’s team beat New College Pontefract 2-0 to gain a place in the semi-final, however Southport played better on the day beating us 2-1.

Head of Curriculum for PE, Catherine Stanworth said, “The players and the PE team have been ‘tweeting’ all year and have gained lots of new followers including British Volleyball player Dan Hunter who competed for Great Britain in the London 2012 Games. Both teams have played consistently well and we have high hopes for even better things next year.”
