Financial Support for 16-18 year old students

Assistance from our College Bursary Fund is available to students aged 16-18 with a household income of £30,000 (gross) per year or below. The following awards are available:

  • Free bus travel*
  • Equipment awards for students on various courses including Hair, Beauty, Art, Public Services, Engineering, Childcare and Health and Social Care
  • Free College meals**

There is also a Guaranteed Study Bursary* of up to £1,200 a year for students who are one of the following:

  • In receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit
  • In receipt of Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance
  • In the care of the Local Authority
  • A Care Leaver

Travel

All 16-18 year old students are eligible for subsidised termly bus passes, available to purchase from Student Services.

Students with a household income below £30,000 (gross) per year can apply for:

  • Free bus travel
  • Free equipment and uniform (if applicable) – on various courses including Hair, Beauty, Art, Public Services, Engineering, Childcare and Health and Social Care

Free Breakfast and Meals

All students arriving before 9am each day can enjoy a FREE healthy breakfast in our Refectory. Free fruit is available to all students whilst in College.

Free College Meals

The Government has extended free meals from school aged children to College students. The available funding is for disadvantaged students aged between 16 and 18 at the start of their course.

For the purposes of eligibility, ‘disadvantaged’ is defined as the student being in receipt of, or having parents who are receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income related Employment and Support Allowance
  • The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (provided they are not entitled to Working Tax Credit) with a gross income of under £16,190
  • Universal Credit with net earnings not exceeding the equivalent of £7,400
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Working Tax Credit run-on – paid four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

Eligible students will receive a credit of £2.50 onto their student smart ID card each day they are in College.  Funds not spent on the day will not be transferred over to the next day.

Capacity and Delivery Fund (CDF) – Industry Placements

Support may be available to vocational students undertaking CDF industry placements who may need to travel further to access their placements and/or incur additional costs for equipment and clothing.

Vulnerable Study Bursary*

Student may receive up to £1,200 a year if they are:

  • In receipt of Income Support or Universal Credit (in their own right)
  • In receipt of Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance (in their own right)
  • In the care of the Local Authority
  • A Care Leaver

Apprenticeship Bursary for Care Leavers*

Apprentices are eligible to receive a one off payment of £1000 bursary payment if they have been in the care of the local authority (in care) defined as:

  • An eligible child – a young person who is 16 or 17 and who has been looked after by the local authority/health and social care trust for at least a period of 13 weeks since the age of 14, and who is still looked after
  • A relevant child – a young person who is 16 or 17 who has left care after their 16th birthday and before leaving care was an eligible child
  • A former relevant child – a young person who is aged between 19 and 21 (up to their 25th birthday if they are in education or training) who, before turning 18, was either an eligible or relevant child.

Care to Learn Scheme (Childcare)

Students aged under 20 on the first day of the course can apply for support with childcare costs through the Care to Learn Scheme.  Details and how to apply are available at https://www.gov.uk/care-to-learn
