Research the company before you go
Make sure you know what the company does, its aims and values, and who its customers are.
Set some personal goals
Before you start your work placement, set yourself some personal goals that you’d like to achieve
during your employment. Ask yourself what you want to get out of the experience? What would you
like to learn? Are you keen to develop your communication skills or boost your confidence?
Make a good first impression
Turn up on time. Allow plenty of time for your journey.
Introducing yourself shows that you are a good communicator and it’s a good way to find
out who is who within an organisation and to start building contacts.
Keep track of your time in employment
Keeping a diary is a good tool to reflect on the skills you’ve developed during you time on work
experience. You’ll rely on this information to provide evidence for your CV, personal achievement
folder or college interview.
Try to help out and come up with suggestions and ideas. Employers will be impressed if you show
initiative and self-motivation.
It’s a great chance to pick people’s brains and it shows you’re interested. Don’t be afraid to ask
for reassurance or further instructions.
It’s all good experience even if it’s not the career you want to do in the future.
