This course is of a practical nature covering both basic and more advanced ceramic making and decorating techniques. Techniques include pinching, coiling, slabbing, press-moulding, decorative techniques, glazing and throwing. It offers, with guidance, the opportunity to explore different materials, which will allow you to develop and create your own individual ideas and ceramic pieces. The Ceramics Creative Crafts course is an ideal opportunity for those who wish to learn how to produce functional and non – functional ceramics. The course allows you to explore available resources, develop and create your own ideas, providing you with an underpinning knowledge of the creative craft process.

What will I learn?
The course will involve the production of ceramic pieces through the development of basic clay hand-building skills & or throwing techniques. You will also gain an understanding of simple glazing & decorating techniques.
You will produce a course file to show evidence of achievement and include images of your designs and 3D work.
By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Produce functional and non-functional ceramics.
- Explore available resources to use in the production of ceramics.
- Develop and create own ideas to translate into ceramic craft.
- Demonstrate basic clay hand-building skills or throwing techniques.
- Use simple glazing and decorating techniques.
How will the course be assessed?
Most of the learning will be in a class situation with one to one tutorials on a regular basis. Demonstrations will be given on all the different ceramics processes. Students are encouraged to do development work at home, although individual guidance will be given. Students are also encouraged to visit libraries, galleries etc. to provide stimulus for development of ideas.
You will not be expected to complete any course work but you may want to complete a diary/sketch book to show how you have progressed.
Materials and other information
What equipment will I need?
Protective clothing, some basic ceramics tools (advice will be given).
Clay & glazes will be charged for separately by weight which is currently priced at £3 a kilo.
You may also wish to purchase potters tools and some art materials.
After finishing, you may wish to carry on with this course or you may want to try a different kind of Ceramics course such as Clay Modelling or Drawing and Clay Modelling from Life.
