Course Overview

You will need to have access to the internet and the Microsoft Office Excel package to complete this course.

This online course is designed to introduce you to Microsoft Excel and ultimately allow you to have the knowledge and skills for you to be able to create a spreadsheet incorporating basic formulas. It will provide you with the foundation skills needed to progress onto more advanced Excel courses. It is also a great opportunity to develop confidence with your general digital skills to support you in everyday life.

The course is accessible using our online Learning Portal - Moodle

You will be required to read and complete some pre-course documentation in order to access the full course. If learners want to develop further skills, they will be signposted to other courses.

What will I learn?

At the end of the course you will be able to develop your skills in the following areas:
1. Uses of spreadsheets
2. Inputting data
3. Composing basic formulas
4. Formatting a spreadsheet
5. Sorting & Filtering data
6. Printing a spreadsheet

How will the course be assessed?

You will develop knowledge and practical skills about Microsoft Excel while navigating the internet. Each session will focus on specific topics and consist of practical work on a computer following a demonstration. These demonstrations have been developed or accessed by the teacher in the form of videos on our Moodle site. The course may also involve discussions via email, web chat and individual tasks. There will be handouts and activities for participants to complete with teacher guidance and feedback. You will access our Virtual Learning Environment – Moodle to complete all aspects of the course.

Materials and other information

After enrolment you will be given details to access our Moodle platform. This is not an automated response; you will be emailed by one of our tutors within seven days of enrolment. Once you are on Moodle you will see the sessions clearly marked out for you to complete. The course is designed to run over four weeks after an induction session. You will gain access to online tutorial support and receive regular feedback on marked/completed work.

The course is free. Pens and paper would be recommended for the purpose of note taking although online handouts will be made available.

Progression and Careers

An Initial Assessment activity at the start of the course will enable your teacher to identify your starting point. In every session we acknowledge and accommodate for different levels of skill and experience. Students will be encouraged to identify and work on own areas for improvement.

After each session, you will be expected to reflect on the activities and set personal learning goals. During the course you will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the teacher and you will receive feedback on an individual basis. Your progress will be checked using a variety of techniques including question and answer, completed quizzes and practical activities uploaded to the Moodle site.
