An NCC student has said she “couldn’t have asked for anything better” from her time at College as she heads off to the University of Oxford.

Alexandra Mitchell-Males, 18, has achieved AAA in English Literature, History and Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, taking up her offer to study English Language and Literature at St. John’s College.

The former Park High School student, from Trawden, said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic and in shock! I’m completely overwhelmed with my results!

“My courses at Nelson and Colne College have greatly boosted my confidence and my analytical skills which has set me up well for university life and the dissertations and essays that will come with my future studies.

“I have had so many opportunities while at NCC – I’ve been to Washington on a History trip, I’ve done a Pre-Professional Programme in Teaching which is what I want to go and do, and I’ve also taught basic English voluntarily out in the community through the Talk English project. I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“I’ve really had incredible support from my English teacher who repeatedly reassured me that a place at the University of Oxford was achievable – I just had to get beyond the self-doubt. I’ve also met with my tutor on a weekly basis for exam preparation – the help I’ve had really has been amazing.

“I would definitely recommend Nelson and Colne College – it’s the perfect place to develop intellectually and personally. It nurtures young people to the best that they can be and builds up the confidence they need to achieve things that they didn’t always think that they could achieve.”

In its 2017/18 results, NCC achieved a 99% pass rate at A Level and a 100% pass rate in advanced vocational courses.

The college is top in the country for 16-18 learner achievement at all levels, number one in the country for A Levels, based on progress scores, and the number one college in the country for overall Apprenticeship achievement at all ages and levels.

Government data also places NCC as the best college in the area for vocational courses, based on progress scores, while it is also the best college in Lancashire for student satisfaction, according to the FE Choices Learner Satisfaction Survey.
