2011 has proved to be yet another outstanding year for A Level students at Nelson and Colne College Sixth Form, where they have continued the College’s tradition of academic excellence, gaining an impressive 99.6% pass rate.
Our statistics this year are also outstanding, with 55 A Level students achieving 2 or more A*/A grades; overall 142 A Level students gained the coveted A* or A grades. Not only this, but 78% of A2 students achieved high grades A*-C, whilst 46% achieved top grades, A*-B.
College Principal, Lyn Surgeon, is understandably delighted with the outstanding results of our A2 and AS students “I am thrilled for all of our A Level students who have worked extremely hard this year and are fully deserving of their excellent success. In addition, our Advanced Vocational students have enjoyed 100% success, with record numbers achieving triple distinction, which is equivalent to 3 grade As at A Level. I am also incredibly proud of the excellent team of staff for their continued commitment and dedication to education. Nelson and Colne has a proud tradition of academic excellence, with whole generations of families benefitting from the education they received with us. We are delighted that so many of our students will now be able to go on to university or into employment with relevant skills and increased confidence.”
The College’s outstanding results are evidence of the excellent teaching at Nelson and Colne and mean that many students will achieve their goal of securing a place at university. This year students from the College will progress to top universities including Oxford, Imperial College London, Manchester, Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Durham and Leicester.
The College’s extensive specialist support programme, which was developed with the needs of high achievers in mind, recognises talented students early and they are mentored by staff who are highly experienced in helping students progress to top institutions. In addition, the College offers Pre-Professional programmes, which prepare students for challenging careers including Medicine, Law, Teaching and Journalism, and this year, many students have successfully gained places at university to study Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Law, Mathematics, Archaeology and Biomedical Science.
This year’s exceptional A Level achievements, the seventh consecutive year of improved results, demonstrates that the College is providing the best possible education for the young people of Pendle, Burnley and beyond.
Nelson and Colne College has been judged as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in two full inspections since 2005 and was awarded national Beacon College status in 2006, which confirms that Pendle has one of the country’s best colleges on its doorstep.
