A stellar student from Nelson and Colne College has spent the lockdown period mentoring others via WhatsApp, while waiting on the grades that have provided her with progression towards her dream career.
Waheeda Khatun, 18, from Burnley, achieved A*AA in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics and will progress on to the University of Manchester to study Medicine – one step closer to her aspiration of becoming a doctor.
During the pandemic, Waheeda put her time to good use by offering to mentor GCSE students. Initially putting out the message via WhatsApp to friends and family, word soon spread, and Waheeda found herself supporting teenagers in a wide range of subjects from Science and Mathematics through to English and Humanities.
During her time at College, Waheeda has acted as a student voice in the form of student governor, attending Nelson and Colne College Group Board of Corporation meetings. She has also sought to better the experience of other students as President of the Student Hub at College.
Waheeda, formerly of Sir John Thursby Community College in Burnley, said: “I’m delighted with my results and these have enabled me to progress to my first-choice university of Manchester to study Medicine.
“The Pre-Professional Programme in Medicine was fantastic, and it is very good for supporting you through highly competitive Medicine applications.
“My teachers at College have been very supportive and were always willing to help me when I needed it.”
Waheeda has also praised Nelson and Colne College’s extracurricular programme and facilities for her development.
She added: “I very much enjoyed the extracurricular opportunities that were on offer at College, such as the A&E Cadets and the Student Hub to build my experience.
“I would recommend Nelson and Colne College because the environment is well suited for studying, whether that is in a group in the Learning Resource Centre, or independently in the silent study areas.”
