Nelson and Colne College student Ishaq Akbar has his eyes on a career in finance in the City of London after achieving A*AA in his A Levels.

Ishaq, 18, from Burnley, is progressing on to University College London to study Mathematics after completing his A Levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics.

A former student of Sir John Thursby Community College, Ishaq experienced the buzz of working in the capital when he enjoyed two weeks working at a bank in the heart of London’s financial centre.

Ishaq said: “I’m so happy and proud that I have received my first choice offer for university. I’ve really enjoyed my time at NCC – it has been a great college for me. The teachers are extremely helpful and there is lots of support available to students outside of the classroom as well as in it.

“I have also had a number of brilliant opportunities during my time at NCC too. One thing I was introduced to was the Social Mobility Foundation – something that I had never heard of before or would have considered but for being made aware of it by my tutor.

“Through that, I spent two weeks at JP Morgan in London which was an amazing experience and really useful for me looking to go into a finance related career.

“I want to go to University College London to experience more of life in the city, and because it is a Russell Group university which was always going to be key in my decision.”

In its 2017/18 results, NCC achieved a 99% pass rate at A Level and a 100% pass rate in advanced vocational courses.

The college is top in the country for 16-18 learner achievement at all levels, number one in the country for A Levels, based on progress scores, and the number one college in the country for overall Apprenticeship achievement at all ages and levels.

Government data also places NCC as the best college in the area for vocational courses, based on progress scores, while it is also the best college in Lancashire for student satisfaction, according to the FE Choices Learner Satisfaction Survey.
