The high standard of Nursing Cadets studying at Nelson and Colne College and working at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust came under the spotlight at the first Cadet Awards ceremony.

Held at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, Nursing Cadet Fiona Brotherton received a ‘Special Merit Award’ while nine more Nelson and Colne College Cadets received Certificates of Distinction from Christine Pearson, Director of Nursing at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Fiona was one of 10 Nelson and Colne College Cadets to complete their nursing studies at East Lancashire Hospitals alongside Chantelle Jade Singleton, Eliza Trickett, Hayley Gilbert, Jasmin Wilson, Kira Dugdale, Zoe Baistow, Zara Hussain, Lucy Murray and Bethany Slinger.

Linda Whitfield, Head of Workforce Education at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The Cadet Awards are absolutely the highest award given to Nursing Cadets and are testimony to the strong partnership we enjoy with Nelson and Colne College.”

Following successful completion of the Cadet Programme, the Cadets now begin their next challenges – some to University as student nurses, student paramedics and student radiographers, as well as other professions.

Laura Barrowclough, Nelson and Colne College’s Curriculum Leader for Health and Social Care, said: “I am very proud of the achievements of my Cadets.

“The dedication and professionalism that they have shown throughout their placements is an inspiration to all. The experiences within ELHT have helped to develop their academia in such a way that  that these students have all achieved triple distinction star.”

Each year, East Lancashire Hospitals welcomes over 100 Cadets who combine hospital placements with academic studies for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma.
