A budding Mathematician is heading to the University of Cambridge after achieving A*A*A*A in his A Levels at Nelson and Colne College.

Lewis Gorton, 18, gained his grades in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, and the former Colne Primet Academy student has praised Nelson and Colne College for the support he has received in achieving his dream university place.

Lewis, from Colne, said: “I’m delighted with my results and I’m relieved! The idea of going to Cambridge is something that has developed while I have been at Nelson and Colne College and I’m happy to be progressing there.

“I’ve always been interested in Mathematics and my ultimate ambition is to become a researcher in the field. I’m grateful to NCC for funding additional one to one tutoring for me, which helped me to prepare for Cambridge’s entry exams and supported the development of my problem-solving skills.”

Lewis has also thanked the College for its excellent extracurricular offer, which has supported and developed his learning over the last two years.

Lewis added: “The support I have received generally at NCC has been fantastic – staff here never let you down, and they are great for providing advice on careers and university courses.

“The teaching standards are strong in the classroom, there is good additional support outside the classroom hours with workshops, and the open door staffroom policy for any help you may need is very useful.

“As well as developing you academically, College has helped to develop my personal skills such as critical thinking, and these skills will prepare me well for life.

“I have been able to enjoy a range of clubs that I wouldn’t do at A Level but have the opportunity to partake in them out of pure interest, such as Drama Club, Philosophy Club, the Debating Society, sessions on financial wellbeing and the Pre-Professional Mathematics Programme.

“I really enjoy the good working environment at College – it is the ideal mix of pushing you to work hard and achieve your best academically, while supporting your personal development.”

In 2019, Nelson and Colne College achieved a 99% pass rate and many students progressed on to Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge, to take up highly competitive degrees in Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Computer Science, Law and Economics.

To follow in the footsteps of this year’s A Level stars, enrolment will be taking place at Nelson and Colne College on GCSE Results Day on Thursday 22 August, and on Friday 23 August.

Nelson and Colne College is the number one college in the country for 16-18 learner achievement, based on government data, and it is number one in Lancashire for A Levels, based on progress scores. It is also the number one college in Lancashire for student satisfaction, based on the government’s FE Choices survey.
